چکیده
Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIPO) is a syndrome characterized by the presence of recurrent episodes of clinical intestinal obstruction in the absence of obstructive lesions. Although this syndrome is rare, it causes a high morbidity. It is caused by a disturbance of the intestinal motility, that results in a failure of the progression of the intestinal content. Basically, the failure of the intestinal motility is a consequence of muscular disorder, neurological disorder or both. Usually, CIPO is secondary to other systemic disease; however, in the last years, many cases of primary CIPO have been described. The use of new manometric tecniques and specific histological procedures have allowed to clarify the pathogenesis of some of these entities including mitochondrial diseases and paraneoplasic syndromes. Clinical manifestations of CIPO are diverse, depending on the location and extension of the motility disorder. As the diagnosis of this disease is usually not an easy task, patients frecuently undergo unnecesary surgical interventions, are diagnosed of psyquiatric disorders, or the correct diagnosis is delayed several years after the first symptoms arise. The aims of the treatment are to maintain the nutritional condition and to improve symptoms using nutritional measures, drugs or, eventually, endoscopical or surgical procedures.

Intestinal pseudo-obstruction is a condition in which the intestine’s ability to push food through is reduced. It often leads to the dilation of the various parts of the bowel. It can be idiopathic or inherited from a parent, or caused by another disease. We report a rare case of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in a 3-year-old boy who referred with acute abdominal pain, and was lat...

Three cases are described of end stage chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction successfully treated by subtotal enterectomy and home parenteral nutrition (HPN). In all three patients prior use of drugs to stimulate gastrointestinal motility, antibiotics to suppress bacterial overgrowth and surgical bypass of dilated bowel had failed to alleviate the symptoms of chronic intestinal obstruction. Sim...

Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction is a rare intestinal motility disorder. It is characterized by recurrent or persistent findings of intestinal obstruction in the absence of any mechanical obstruction. Various systemic or congenital diseases are held responsible in the etiology; moreover, it is accepted as idiopathic upon failure of detection of a true reason. We present hereby two rare cas...

Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIP) represents a particularly difficult clinical challenge. It is a rare and highly morbid syndrome characterised by impaired gastrointestinal propulsion together with symptoms and signs of bowel obstruction in the absence of any lesions occluding the gut lumen. CIP can be classified as either "secondary" to a wide array of recognised pathological conditi...
